Aldeburgh Festival: Zemlya

Aldeburgh Festival: Zemlya (PG)

Friday 27 Jun 20257:00pm (Closed)

We are delighted and honoured to be a featured venue for the 2025 Aldeburgh Festival.

A screening of the Ukrainian film Earth (Zemlya) with live improvisation from silent-film pianist Daan van den Hurk.

Earth is celebrated as one of cinema’s supreme visual masterpieces. The immensity of the sky bears down on the Ukrainian steppe as the arrival of a tractor signals a fundamental change to a centuries-old way of life. The film is notable for its extraordinarily potent images of wheat fields, ripe fruit and weather-beaten faces.

Dovzhenko’s intense lyricism, moving between static painterly compositions and choreographed sequences, makes large scale social change appear as spontaneous and inevitable as the change of seasons. Conceived when the process was still in its voluntary phase but released amidst the conflict and turmoil engendered by forced collectivisation, Dovzhenko’s reconciliation of social conflict with the natural order did not find much favour with the Stalinist authorities.

Earth is commonly regarded as Dovzhenko's masterpiece and as one of the greatest films ever made.
