Meet the Author: Gyles Brandreth

Meet the Author: Gyles Brandreth

Wednesday 4 Nov 20261:30pm

He's known for his irrepressible good humour, garish jumpers and endless supply of anecdotes so we're delighted that Gyles Brandreth will be joining us at The Riverside for this special lunchtime event.

Gyles regularly appears on radio, including BBC Radio Four's 'Just a Minute', and television, notably 'Countdown', 'Celebrity Gogglebox' and 'The One Show'.

He has his own popular and insightful podcast, called Rosebud, exploring the early memories of his famous guests.

And he's written dozens of books - at the last count it was 63!

In this, his latest, Gyles has worked with his physiotherapist Finola Burrell to compile a list of 'The 7 Secrets of the Hundred-Year Life'.

It's an unabashed 'self-help' book which is a wonderfully entertaining page-turner as well as a source of practical tips and fascinating information.

He was prompted to write it, he says, after a number of falls surprised him, and his wife - he took her down with him each time. Told to work with a physio to aid his recovery and prevent future episodes, he met Finola and together they've worked on this account of how to stay healthy, active and alert at every age, not just in terms of reaching our century - though, increasingly, many of us will achieve this milestone...

It's a book full of warm, witty and wise comments and observations, and it's fun, encouraging and uplifting. This afternoon event with Gyles will undoubtedly bring laughter, joy and hope.

Tickets are £20 to include a signed copy of the book, presented at the event. One further ticket can be purchased for £12, without the book.

Please include your full name with your reservation so that we can allocate your book for collection on arrival on the day.

Once Upon a Time in Suffolk

Once Upon a Time in Suffolk (12A)

Friday 6 Nov 20262:00pm7:30pm

Once Upon a Time in Suffolk is an anthology of new short films inspired by classic fairy tales and Suffolk legends, made by the region’s emerging creative talents. One of these films was made in Holton at the primary school. Over the two years of production more than 250 local people were mentored by industry veterans and gained filmmaking experience in a rural area where such opportunities wouldn’t otherwise exist.

From Red Riding Hood in Lowestoft to Rapunzel in Dedham Vale and some original twists on familiar things, these magical yarns are sometimes funny, sometimes dark, always heartfelt.

Stories are the beating heart of Suffolk. They live in the echo of footsteps through old churches, in the salt wind that rattles the windows of seaside cottages. These are tales of kindness and folly, of love and loss, of courage and consequence.

They Live

They Live (15)

Sunday 8 Nov 20266:00pm

A biting satire on modern society that actually makes more sense today than it did at its time of release, John Carpenter’s They Live is a cleverly envisioned, intricately layered & rivetingly told sci-fi horror that was far ahead of its time, and its critical take on the power of commercialism & influence of advertising on the masses is only growing more relevant with time.

The story follows a drifter who arrives in Los Angeles looking for work and stumbles upon a pair of sunglasses that allows him to see everything around him for what they really are. As he learns that the subliminal messages in mass media are part of a hidden agenda by aliens masquerading as human beings to keep the human civilization subdued, he tries to reveal the truth to the world.

Written & directed by John Carpenter (best known for Halloween & The Thing), They Live takes its time to establish its bleak atmosphere, and only escalates once all the pieces on the board are set. Keeping a firm grip on the pacing & build up, the director paints a grim portrait of what mankind is reduced to but it is the film’s close proximity with our current scenario that makes it compelling on so many levels.

Carpenter doesn’t hold back in illustrating the corrupting power of mass media and captures the omnipresent subliminal commands behind every advertising banner for what they are. Greyscale photography is utilized to illustrate the truth while colored segments represent the world that’s completely oblivious to the reality it’s living in. Carpenter’s score here may not rank amongst his finest compositions but it still works.

Coming to the performances, the cast is led by noted WWF icon “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and features Keith David & Meg Foster in supporting roles. Piper is surprisingly low-key here, compared to his volatile in-ring persona, and chips in with a measured input that aptly articulates his character’s emotions & confusion. David delivers a sturdy performance that stands neck to neck with Piper’s, while Foster’s work has an enigmatic quality to it.

On an overall scale, They Live is a brilliantly directed, deftly scripted, exquisitely witted, skilfully photographed, expertly edited, splendidly performed & finely scored example of its genre(s) that paints an unsettling portrait of the world we live in, and is another underrated gem from Carpenter that’s well deserving of its cult following. Smart, subversive & stimulating, this political satire has aged like wine and will continue to resonate strongly & more deeply as the years roll on.

De Gaulle: Résistance

De Gaulle: Résistance (15)

Monday 9 Nov 20263:00pm7:00pm
Tuesday 10 Nov 20263:00pm

The monumental first chapter of Antonin Baudry’s two-part historical epic, and a cinematic sensation in its native France, De Gaulle: Résistance chronicles General Charles de Gaulle’s defiant flight to London to ignite the French Resistance following the collapse of France.

June, 1940. France collapses and signs the armistice. In the midst of the chaos, one man refuses to give up. Alone against the odds, this unknown general flees to London to save what remains of freedom.

Without an army, without backing, without hope. But with one irrational conviction – France, his France, has not laid down arms. Taking the ultimate gamble, he seeks to convince the world that the battle for France is neither over, nor lost.

Reality, however, is unyielding and seems determined to prove him wrong. Yet, little by little, resistance fighters, rebellious students and determined soldiers rise up in England, France and Africa to join the cause. Their faith, audacity and thirst for freedom defy what history seemed to have written in advance.

Boasting an incredible international ensemble cast including Simon Russell Beale (The Death of Stalin) as Winston Churchill and Lambert Wilson (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris), this breathless, beautifully shot drama explores the audacity, personal cost, and conviction required to spark a global resistance movement.

De Gaulle Part 2: Liberté

De Gaulle Part 2: Liberté (15)

Wednesday 11 Nov 20263:00pm7:00pm
Thursday 12 Nov 20263:00pm

The staggering conclusion to Antonin Baudry's sweeping two-part historical biographical drama (following De Gaulle: Résistance) follows in the fight for liberation from Nazi occupation.

Three leaders of the French Resistance fight parallel battles during World War Two to liberate a Free France - and the whole of Europe - from Nazi occupation. General Charles De Gaulle prepares for the Casablanca Conference, where alongside the struggle against Nazism he must struggle against General Giraud, President Roosevelt and the United States of America's vision for a redrawn map of Europe with a significantly depleted French nation. Jean Moulin must unite the ideologically spread Resistance leaders and fight many battles on the home front. General Leclerc must lead his battalion of African soldiers to glory againts the panzers of the German army, who greatly outnumber the French. These three threads intertwine as France fights on towards freedom.

De Gaulle: Liberté is the second half of the biggest French film project in 2026, based on Julian Jackson's book A Certain Idea of France: The Life of Charles De Gaulle and receiving its premiere out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Simon Abkarian as the titular general, with Félix Kysyl and Niels Schneider as Moulin and Leclerc respectively.

Queen at Sea

Queen at Sea (15)

Monday 16 Nov 20267:30pm

Juliette Binoche stars as a woman thrown into a complex moral dilemma when she starts to doubt her stepfather has her vulnerable mother’s best interests at heart. Amanda is exasperated when she finds her mother and stepfather engaged in a sexual act. Leslie is living with advanced dementia and Amanda can’t be certain that Martin’s actions are what her mother wants. Winner of the Berlin Silver Bear Jury Prize, this fascinating and human drama from Ballast director Hammer is a subtle, beautifully composed masterwork. His camera asymmetrically frames his characters, exploring distance and powerlessness alongside the love and intimacy that exists between them. And Binoche, Courtenay and Calder-Marshall offer committed, heartbreakingly naturalistic performances that comfortably rank as some of the best of the year.

Friday 20 Nov 20267:30pm
Saturday 21 Nov 20267:30pm

RMTC are back this autumn with “Stepping Out”

Written by Richard Harris in 1984, “Stepping Out” was produced in the West End, London, where it received the Evening Standard Comedy of the Year Award, and on Broadway, New York.

A warm and extremely funny play, it follows the lives, laughs and loves of a group of women (and one man) from disparate backgrounds who attend a weekly tap-dance class in a dingy North London church hall.

Ex-professional dancer Mavis who runs the class is joined by cheerfully overweight Sylvia; Andy, a plain do-gooder with no confidence; snobby but well-meaning Vera; timid Dorothy who works in Social Security; Maxine who is attractive, sharp and very shrewd; fat, plain Lynne; Rose, who is just here for a good time, and Geoffrey, the lone male of the group. Watch as these once complex characters, navigate the challenges and triumphs of their journey, as they head towards a grand public, charity show performance, transformed into triumphant tappers, worthy of any chorus line.

Tap your troubles away with this fabulous story that is testament to the power of community, friendship, and the transformative experience of dance and has been praised for its witty dialogue, memorable characters, and the uplifting message it conveys about the courage and resilience of ordinary people.

Sunday 22 Nov 20263:00pm

GIANT, filmed live at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre !

The play is currently playing on Broadway and has been nominated for 4 Tony Awards including Best Play and Leading Actor for John Lithgow.

A world-famous children’s author under threat, a battle of wills in the wake of scandal and one chance to make amends, GIANT tells the story of Roald Dahl and the true scandal that shook his legacy. GIANT stars Tony, Golden Globe, and Olivier Award-winner John Lithgow (Conclave, The Crown) as author Roald Dahl; Aya Cash (The Boys, The Franchise, You’re the Worst) as US Publisher Jessie Stone; Olivier Award-winner Elliot Levey (Cold War, Patriots, Good) as Tom Maschler, Dahl’s British Jewish Publisher; Olivier Award-nominee Rachael Stirling (The Divine Mrs S) as Felicity Crosland, Roald Dahl’s fiancée; Tessa Bonham Jones (Dune: Prophecy, The Young Woman and the Sea) as Hallie; and Richard Hope (Hijack) as Wally Saunders, Dahl’s handyman.

It’s the summer of 1983, The Witches is about to hit the shelves and Roald Dahl is making last-minute edits. But the outcry at his recent, explicitly antisemitic article won’t die down. Across a single afternoon at his family home, and rocked by an unexpectedly explosive confrontation, Dahl is forced to choose: make a public apology or risk his name and reputation.

Inspired by real events, GIANT explores with dark humour the difference between considered opinion and dangerous rhetoric offering a complicated portrait of a fiendishly charismatic icon.

John Lithgow says: ‘I play the central character of Roald Dahl, a man of dizzying complexity, on a day of crisis in his life. The story takes place forty years ago, but it resonates powerfully with events of our present day. No play I’ve ever been in has had such an impact on audiences.'

★★★★★ 'GIANT is all that theatre should be' DAILY MAIL

★★★★★ 'The most thought-provoking play of the decade' THE TIMES

Ken Russell's The Devils

Ken Russell's The Devils (18)

Sunday 22 Nov 20266:00pm

“My most – Indeed my only – political film.” That was how visionary director Ken Russell described his incendiary 1971 masterpiece … Yet since opening to divisive reviews 55 years ago, Russell’s masterpiece has never been released as he intended … The story The Devils tells is an engrossing one, inspired by extraordinary real-life events that climaxed in the public burning of a priest, Urbain Grandier, in the French city of Loudun in 1634 … Despite their apparently fantastical nature, the historical facts behind The Devils are well documented … Most celebrated of the many accounts, however, is Aldous Huxley’s 1952 classic The Devils of Loudun, which is credited as the source of Russell’s movie, alongside John Whiting’s stage-play The Devils, which was first performed by the RSC in 1961. Russell was “knocked out” by Huxley’s book, and wanted his film to inspire a similarly powerful reaction in audiences. For him, this was “a story about brainwashing”. Despite having converted to Catholicism many years earlier, Russell was confident that the events at Loudun had nothing to do with demons or the supernatural and everything to do with political corruption and weaponised hysteria … Shot at Pinewood Studios on awe-inspiringly pristine sets designed by fledgling artist Derek Jarman, The Devils was a controversial project from the outset … Russell’s original vision proved to be ahead of its time, with key sequences deemed too intense for its contemporary viewers. Most notably, a sequence in which a very public display of alleged “demonic possession” climaxed in hysterical nuns tearing down and ravaging a giant crucifix was excised in its entirety, alongside other edits made for the UK release, with further cuts for American audiences. For Russell, these alterations were heartbreaking because, as he told me in 2002, the deleted material not only contained “some of my finest work”, but also encapsulated the thematic heart of the film – a pantomime spectacle of blasphemy that is paraded out for corrupt political purposes … This is the version of The Devils that Ken Russell hoped would one day be available to international audiences – a fearless masterpiece that is even more relevant in these “post-truth” times than it was when Russell first conjured its unforgettably fiery excesses.
