Two of opera’s most extraordinary artists return to The Met: Live in HD for Verdi’s thrilling take on the immortal Shakespearean tale of the scheming couple determined to seize power at any cost. Following past triumphs in many of Verdi’s signature baritone roles, Quinn Kelsey is the Scottish king haunted by the ghosts of his murderous ascent to the throne, opposite Lise Davidsen—the world’s reigning dramatic soprano—as the power-mad Lady Macbeth, whose ruinous ambition damns them both. EAST X EAST: A Special Programme from Suffolk Shorts

Suffolk Shorts is proud to present EAST X EAST, a curated programme of short films that spans the darkly comic, the deeply personal and the strikingly strange. From a man confronted with his own obituary to a young woman who discovers the truth beyond her bunker, these films explore what it means to face reality - however uncomfortable, uncanny or unexpected that reality turns out to be.

The selection is diverse. There's satirical bite in Obituary and Sweltan, where self-interest meets consequence, and gentle comedy in Three Wise-ish Men, which finds humour in an ancient story. Grief and identity run through Rabbit Ears and Depersonalisation Station, both unflinching in their exploration of loss and disconnection. Science fiction, magical realism and psychological thriller elements surface in Iris Protocol and Mimic, while Potwash offers a coming-of-age story with real bite, set in the pressure-cooker world of a professional kitchen.

Grounding the programme is a strong sense of place. From the Dunes turns its lens on Hemsby's coastal erosion, one of the most severe in the world, while Crossing the Earth - shot in Halesworth and Yoxford with a cast and crew drawn entirely from East Anglia - is a tender exploration of family, loss and connection to a beloved Suffolk landmark.

Together, these ten films showcase the range and ambition of contemporary short filmmaking, from homegrown East Anglian talent to stories that reach far beyond the region's borders.

As they traverse Lagos, Remi and Akin (real-life brothers Chibuike Marvellous and Godwin Egbo) begin to understand him as a person, and the sacrifices he has made for them. But as Nigeria’s presidential election results loom, events transpire that will dramatically change their relationship with him.

He's known for his irrepressible good humour, garish jumpers and endless supply of anecdotes so we're delighted that Gyles Brandreth will be joining us at The Riverside for this special lunchtime event.

And he's written dozens of books - at the last count it was 63!

In this, his latest, Gyles has worked with his physiotherapist Finola Burrell to compile a list of 'The 7 Secrets of the Hundred-Year Life'.

It's an unabashed 'self-help' book which is a wonderfully entertaining page-turner as well as a source of practical tips and fascinating information.

He was prompted to write it, he says, after a number of falls surprised him, and his wife - he took her down with him each time. Told to work with a physio to aid his recovery and prevent future episodes, he met Finola and together they've worked on this account of how to stay healthy, active and alert at every age, not just in terms of reaching our century - though, increasingly, many of us will achieve this milestone...

It's a book full of warm, witty and wise comments and observations, and it's fun, encouraging and uplifting. This afternoon event with Gyles will undoubtedly bring laughter, joy and hope.

Josh O’Connor (The Crown; Challengers) leads the cast in this searing revival of Clifford Odets’ knockout American classic.

A biting satire on modern society that actually makes more sense today than it did at its time of release, John Carpenter’s They Live is a cleverly envisioned, intricately layered & rivetingly told sci-fi horror that was far ahead of its time, and its critical take on the power of commercialism & influence of advertising on the masses is only growing more relevant with time.

The story follows a drifter who arrives in Los Angeles looking for work and stumbles upon a pair of sunglasses that allows him to see everything around him for what they really are. As he learns that the subliminal messages in mass media are part of a hidden agenda by aliens masquerading as human beings to keep the human civilization subdued, he tries to reveal the truth to the world.

Written & directed by John Carpenter (best known for Halloween & The Thing), They Live takes its time to establish its bleak atmosphere, and only escalates once all the pieces on the board are set. Keeping a firm grip on the pacing & build up, the director paints a grim portrait of what mankind is reduced to but it is the film’s close proximity with our current scenario that makes it compelling on so many levels.

Carpenter doesn’t hold back in illustrating the corrupting power of mass media and captures the omnipresent subliminal commands behind every advertising banner for what they are. Greyscale photography is utilized to illustrate the truth while colored segments represent the world that’s completely oblivious to the reality it’s living in. Carpenter’s score here may not rank amongst his finest compositions but it still works.

Coming to the performances, the cast is led by noted WWF icon “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and features Keith David & Meg Foster in supporting roles. Piper is surprisingly low-key here, compared to his volatile in-ring persona, and chips in with a measured input that aptly articulates his character’s emotions & confusion. David delivers a sturdy performance that stands neck to neck with Piper’s, while Foster’s work has an enigmatic quality to it.

On an overall scale, They Live is a brilliantly directed, deftly scripted, exquisitely witted, skilfully photographed, expertly edited, splendidly performed & finely scored example of its genre(s) that paints an unsettling portrait of the world we live in, and is another underrated gem from Carpenter that’s well deserving of its cult following. Smart, subversive & stimulating, this political satire has aged like wine and will continue to resonate strongly & more deeply as the years roll on.
